About Newtown

Newtown is a suburb in the Inner West, and it is one of the suburbs in New South Wales, Australia. It is four kilometers south-west of the Sydney central business district.

History of Newtown

Newtown was built as a farming and residential area in the early 19th century. In 1832, the area got its name from a grocery store opened by John and Margaret Webster.

The New Theatre formed in 1932. It is Australia`s oldest ceaseless performing theatre. Due to the lack of "lyrics"-sized venues many theatres, cinemas, and music venues in the Sydney CBD were demolished in the 70s and 80s.
